Webb Telescope Captures Infant Planets in Different Stages of Development The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has directly imaged two gas giant planets orbiting a young sun-like star named YSES-1, located 310 light-years away in the Milky Way.
One planet, 14 times the mass of Jupiter, is surrounded by a disk of small-grained dust, possibly indicating an early formation stage or a collision. The other, six times Jupiter’s mass, has silicate clouds in its atmosphere but lacks a surrounding disk.
Astronomers were surprised by the different developmental stages of these planets, challenging existing models of planetary formation. The discovery highlights the complex nature of how planetary systems evolve, offering insights into the formation of our own solar system.
