Pakistan Declares Simla Agreement 'Defunct,' Reverts to 1948 Position

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced on Thursday that the country has terminated the Simla Agreement with India, effectively reverting to its 1948 position on the Line of Control (LoC).

Speaking on the matter, Asif declared that the LoC should now be considered a ceasefire line, signaling a major shift in Pakistan’s stance on bilateral relations with India. He emphasized that the Simla Agreement, signed in 1972, is now a “dead document”, and future disputes will be handled multilaterally or internationally.

This move comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations, with Pakistan previously suspending the agreement after India revoked Article 370 in August 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.

Asif also warned that while Pakistan does not seek war, it will respond strongly if conflict is imposed upon it.
