King Charles, Queen Camilla unveil memorable Coronation Day portraits

King Charles and Queen Camilla have unveiled their Coronation State Portraits, exactly two years after they Coronation, which took place on May 6, 2023.

Charles and Camilla visited the National Gallery, of which the King is Royal Patron, and unveiled their new portraits. Their visit also marked the re-opening of the Sainsbury Wing, which was closed for two years for a transformational project for the National Gallery’s 200th anniversary.

When they arrived at the Sainsbury Wing, the monarchs were greeted by a fanfare from the State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry Band. For the memorable day, the Queen was dressed in a red wool crepe dress by Fiona Clare.

The King and Queen’s portraits show the them wearing their Robes of State and standing next to their sparkling crowns.

The couple commissioned their portraits themselves and chose different artists. Charles assigned his portrait to Peter Kuhfeld and Camilla picked Paul S. Benney. The portraits are now part of The Royal Collection.

After the grand unveiling at the National Gallery, the new portraits will be displayed at the Central Hall till June 5th, after which they will be moved to the Throne Room at the Buckingham Palace, which will be their permanent home.
