KARACHI — The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has raised concern over a growing number of polio vaccine refusals in Karachi, reporting that 37,711 parents declined to vaccinate their children during the May immunisation campaign.
The data reflects a slight increase from April, when 37,360 refusals were recorded. Health officials warn that this persistent trend poses a serious challenge to Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts.
District East reported the highest number of refusals in May, with 9,433 cases. District Central followed with 7,141, while Kemari recorded 7,111 refusals. Other districts also saw significant numbers: Malir (4,606), Korangi (3,453), South (3,145), and West (2,922).
According to the EOC, the refusal rate remains a major obstacle in the fight against polio. “Eradicating polio requires consistent support from parents,” the centre stated, adding that targeted efforts are underway in high-risk union councils.
Officials attribute the refusals largely to misinformation and a lack of awareness about the safety and importance of the vaccine.
The latest figures come as the Pakistan Polio Programme continues its third round of National Immunisation Days (NIDs), aiming to reach every child under five with life-saving polio drops.
Polio is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects young children. It can cause irreversible paralysis and, in severe cases, death. While there is no cure, vaccination remains the most effective tool to prevent infection and protect communities.
