Telefonica’s Network Update Causes Partial Communications Disruption in Spain
Spain Faces Telecom Outage Weeks After Nationwide Blackout
Madrid: Spain experienced a major communications disruption on Tuesday as Telefonica’s network upgrade led to outages affecting fixed landlines and emergency services in multiple regions. The company confirmed that its crews were working to restore services, with the 112 emergency line already back online.
Widespread Impact
The outage comes just four weeks after Spain and Portugal suffered a catastrophic power blackout, which plunged both countries into darkness for nearly 23 hours. The previous blackout disrupted metro systems, airports, and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
According to DownDetector, the networks of all major telecom providers in Spain, including Telefonica, were affected, leaving customers unable to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data. While the disruption has been linked to Telefonica’s network upgrade, users from other providers also reported connectivity issues.
Government Response
Spain’s Ministry of Digital Transformation confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services in various regions issued alternative contact numbers due to the temporary unavailability of the national emergency number 112.
Authorities are working to ensure full restoration of services and assess the broader impact of the outage on Spain’s telecommunications infrastructure.
