Google Search Unveils AI Mode for Smarter Queries

Google has announced a major upgrade to its search engine with the introduction of AI Mode, a feature designed to enhance search capabilities using advanced artificial intelligence. The announcement was made at Google I/O 2025, where CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the company’s commitment to AI-driven innovation.

AI Mode builds upon AI Overviews, offering deeper reasoning, multimodal search capabilities, and the ability to refine queries with follow-up questions. Google’s Head of Search, Liz Reid, described AI Mode as a tool that enables users to explore topics more thoroughly than traditional search methods.

The feature is currently available in the United States, with plans for expansion to other regions. Google emphasized that AI Mode would provide hyper-relevant content by analyzing multiple sources across the web.

The company’s push into generative AI comes amid growing competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has integrated search capabilities into its chatbot. Analysts have raised concerns about the impact of AI-generated summaries on Google’s advertising-based business model, as fewer users may click on traditional search results.

Additionally, Apple executive Eddy Cue recently testified in a federal antitrust trial, revealing that Google’s search traffic on Apple devices had declined for the first time in over two decades. This has fueled speculation that Apple may introduce AI-powered alternatives as default search engines, potentially affecting Google’s revenue streams.

Beyond search, Google I/O showcased several AI-driven innovations, including real-time speech translation, virtual clothing try-ons, and automated product searches. The company also introduced an Ultra subscription plan, priced at $250 per month, offering access to its most advanced AI features.

Google’s AI Mode is expected to reshape the search experience, providing users with more intuitive and efficient ways to find information while navigating the evolving landscape of AI-powered technology.
