China and Russia have signed a cooperation agreement to construct a nuclear power plant on the moon, a key component of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). The project, jointly led by both nations, is expected to be completed by 2036.
Strategic Lunar Development
The agreement comes shortly after NASA unveiled its 2026 budget proposal, which would eliminate plans for an orbital lunar outpost. The ILRS aims to establish a permanent, manned lunar colony at the moon’s south pole, with China’s 2028 Chang’e-8 mission laying the groundwork for future operations.
Autonomous Construction
According to Yury Borisov, director general of Roscosmos, the Chinese-Russian reactor will likely be built autonomously, without human presence. While details remain unclear, Borisov stated that the technological steps are nearly ready.
Global Participation
The ILRS initiative has attracted 17 nations, including Egypt, Pakistan, Venezuela, Thailand, and South Africa. China and Russia plan to launch five super heavy-lift rockets between 2030 and 2035 to transport components for the robotic moon base.
This ambitious project marks a significant step in space exploration, positioning China and Russia at the forefront of lunar infrastructure development.
